For the most part the ocean is dark and visibility is very limited. Light can only penetrate to a few fathoms at best. But as on land, there is a big difference when the sun is shining. Colour flashes from the sleek sides of the fish. Curtains of sunlight fold and sweep from the undulating surface. The water is full of life and where the larger creatures such as fish are represented through shape the microscopic animals are handled through variations of colour in the liquid environment.
